Product labelling

The information a product must carry on its packaging, label and accompanying documents is prescribed by law. We review your labelling before the product goes to market.

Labelling obligations for manufacturers, importers and distributors on the European market.

Labelling regulations specify what information is required on products, packaging, labels and accompanying documents. Which obligations apply in an individual case depends in particular on the type of product, the role of the economic operator and the distribution channel.

The EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), for example, contains general requirements for product safety, labelling and traceability. For packaging, the requirements of the PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) also apply, in particular with regard to packaging, recycling, sustainability and material labelling. For medical devices, the Medical Device Regulation (MDR) is decisive. The EU Batteries Regulation governs, among other things, labelling, information and take-back obligations for batteries. For substances and mixtures, the CLP Regulation sets out requirements for classification, labelling and packaging, in particular through hazard pictograms, signal words and hazard and precautionary statements.

The aim is the same in all of these sets of rules: consumer protection, transparency, traceability and compliance with regulatory requirements.

We look at drafts of labels, packaging and accompanying documents before they go into production.

Frequently asked questions about product labelling

Answers to the questions our clients ask us most often about product labelling.

What information must our product carry?

That depends on the product and the regulations that apply to it. As a rule, this concerns manufacturer details, CE marking, warnings, instructions for use and safety information.

What are the consequences of incorrect or incomplete labelling?

The main risks are objections from the authorities, sales bans, recalls, fines and claims under competition law from competitors or associations. An early review reduces these risks.

At what point should we involve you?

When you design your packaging, labels and accompanying documents. At that stage, the information can still be changed before the print run is produced.
